Set in the heart of Athens, the Ancient Agora is a testament to the city’s illustrious history, a focal point of cultural and political activities dating back to the fifth century B.C. This comprehensive guide outlines the best ways to explore the Agora, reliving the era through its ruins and museums, and unveiling the stories embedded in its marbled stones.

Getting There:
The Ancient Agora is located in the Thission district, Athens. You can reach the site by walking down the car-free Dionysiou Areopagitou Street from Acropolis. Alternately, you can use the Metro and disembark at Monastiraki station, which is just a short walk away.

What to See:

1. Temple of Hephaestus: Established in 415 B.C., it’s the best-preserved ancient Greek temple, dedicated to Hephaestus, the god of metalworking and craftsmanship.

2. Stoa of Attalos: Reconstructed in the 1950s, this covered walkway houses the Agora Museum, displaying artifacts recovered from the site.

3. Odeon of Agrippa: Although in ruins now, this grand music hall, built in 15 B.C., was once a lively center of performances.

4. Byzantine Church of the Holy Apostles: This 11th-century church, inside the Agora, showcases the transition of Athens from a Roman city to a Byzantine one.

5. Tholos: The former state house, these ruins unveil the political side of the Agora.

6. Altar of the Twelve Gods: Established in 522 B.C., it was considered the central point of Athens.

7. Eponymous Heroes Statues: These statues were erected to honor the ten heroes representing ten ancient Greek tribes.

Tour Recommendations:
It is recommended to start early as the site might get crowded later in the day. Hire an authorized guide or use an audio guide to understand the rich history of the place. Wear comfortable footwear as stones may be uneven, and carry water during summer months.

Tickets:
Entry tickets cost about 10 € (Euros), but a combination ticket for around 30 € allows you to access other major sites like Acropolis, Theatre of Dionysos etc.
