Nestled in the heart of the West Texas desert, Marfa, a small town of about 2000 people, embodies creativity and minimalism. Its most renowned piece is the breathtaking Giant Marfa Mural, an Instagram-favorite that perfectly captures the town’s artistic spirit.
The town of Marfa became a hub for the minimalist art movement in the 1970s, when artist Donald Judd moved there. The Giant Marfa Mural, painted by artists John Cerney and Bob Coronato, depicts classic movie stars and is actually a homage to the 1956 film “Giant”, which was filmed in Marfa itself.
Marfa is located in the high desert of the Trans-Pecos in far West Texas, between the Davis Mountains and Big Bend National Park. The closest airport is Midland International Air and Space Port, about three hours away. The Giant Marfa Mural can be easily found near East Dallas Street and North Austin Street.
There’s no admission fee to view the Giant Marfa Mural. If you plan to visit the Chinati Foundation though, tickets for self-guided tours are $25 for adults, $10 for students, and free for locals and members.
