Gilsfjörður, a tranquil and picturesque fjord, cuts deeply into the Westfjords of Iceland. With its stunning landscapes, abundant birdlife, and peaceful surroundings, Gilsfjörður serves as a serene retreat away from the bustle of Iceland’s more frequented parts.
Gilsfjörður has historically been and continues to be a sparsely populated region known for fishing and farming. The fjord is named after Gisli Sursson, one of the heroes of the Icelandic Sagas. Today, the Gnúpur farm at the end of Gilsfjörður is one of the most remote in Iceland.
Gilsfjörður is located in the picturesque Westfjords, approximately a four-hour drive from Reykjavik along Route 1, transitioning onto Route 60 and then Road 643. Most of the drive is on well-maintained highways, but a 4×4 vehicle is recommended due to the changeable weather conditions.
The primary attraction is the natural beauty of the fjord itself, framed by steep mountains and home to diverse birdlife. You can also visit the Gilsfjörður fjord bridge, a notable civil engineering feat. Whale watching activities may also be possible, as the fjord is known for occasional sightings.
There are no tickets needed to explore Gilsfjörður. All the sights can be accessed freely.
