Set in the heart of northern Iceland, Lake Mývatn is a geological wonderland and a paradise for nature lovers. With its rich diversity of birdlife, fascinating geothermal and volcanic features, it offers an incredibly diverse range of attractions and activities.
Lake Mývatn, meaning ‘Midges Lake,’ was formed approximately 2,300 years ago as a result of a large basaltic lava eruption. Today, it’s renowned for its unique geology, including lava towers, craters, and bubbling mud pools, illustrating a diverse catalogue of Iceland’s volcanic history.
Lake Mývatn is about 90 km east of Akureyri. The region is easily accessible via the Ring Road (Route 1), and you can drive yourself or hop on one of the many organized tours that include the famous Mývatn in their itineraries.
Entrance to Lake Mývatn and most of its natural attractions is free. However, some sights like the Mývatn Nature Baths have an entrance fee. The adult ticket price there is 4700 ISK, whereas youth from 13-15 years pay 2000 ISK. Entrance for children aged 12 and under is free when accompanied by adults.
