Ojos del Salar, meaning “”eyes of the salt,”” features two small, perfectly circular salt lagoons that appear like deep-blue eyes set against the arid desert landscape. This stunning natural site is one of the most photographed locations in the Atacama Desert and is essential for travelers exploring this region.
The lagoons of Ojos del Salar are created by underground rivers that flow beneath the Uyuni Salt Flat. Over time, the salts in the ground dissolved, leading to the formation of these unique pools in areas with less saline water. The water from the salt flats is highly acidic, and locals believe it possesses medicinal qualities. With a salt concentration of 20%, visitors can experience a floating sensation similar to that of the famous Dead Sea, as part of the expansive Atacama Salt Flat (Salar de Atacama), which is the largest reserve of salt and lithium on the planet.
To visit Ojos del Salar, you can rent a car in either Calama or San Pedro de Atacama. The drive from San Pedro de Atacama takes about 40 minutes. Alternatively, you can join a guided tour that also includes stops at the picturesque Laguna Cejar and Tebinquinche. Shared taxis and regular taxis are also available from San Pedro de Atacama, with a travel time of approximately 40 minutes.
There is no entry fee to visit Ojos del Salar. However, if you plan to visit Laguna Cejar, there is an entrance fee of around 5,000 Chilean pesos. Tickets for Laguna Tebinquinche can be purchased on-site, and many guided tours include visits to all these locations.
Ojos del Salar is a remarkable and unforgettable destination in the Atacama Desert, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and adventure. With its stunning landscapes and distinctive swimming opportunities, it is a must-see for any traveler visiting this region.
