Introduction

Construction commenced in 1607 and concluded in 1611 under the direction of Yoshiharu Horio, a feudal lord and the founder of Matsue. The castle’s distinctive architecture, featuring sweeping roofs that resemble the wings of a plover bird, has led to its nickname “”Chidori-jo.””

History

Perched on a hill that overlooks the city, Matsue Castle was built with the intention of enduring warfare and sieges. Despite its military origins, the castle has remarkably survived intact and is well-preserved. The Matsudaira clan, relatives of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, governed the castle from 1638 until Japan’s modernization in the 19th century. The seventh lord of Matsue, Matsudaira Harusato (also known as Lord Fumai), was a prominent advocate of the tea ceremony, establishing Matsue as one of the three major centers for this art form.

How to Get There

Matsue Castle is conveniently reachable from Matsue Station, accessible by train, bus, or plane. The castle is located just two kilometers from the station, with several buses passing by the castle entrance. The Kurutto Matsue Lakeline Bus offers a one-day pass, making it easy and affordable to explore many attractions in this castle town.
