Fox Glacier New Zealand

Fox Glacier, located in the majestic Southern Alps of New Zealand, is a stunning destination that combines natural splendor with thrilling adventures. Named after New Zealand’s Premier William Fox in 1872, this glacier is one of the most accessible in the world. Visitors can explore its icy terrain, admire its dramatic landscapes, and delve into the area’s rich history.

History

The settlement around Fox Glacier began in the 1860s during a gold rush at Gillespies Beach, which attracted people inland. As gold reserves dwindled, settlers, including the Sullivan family, moved to the Weheka Valley to farm. By the early 1900s, the area had transformed into farmland, and by the 1920s, it was being promoted as a scenic wonderland for tourists. The Sullivan family significantly contributed to the area’s tourism infrastructure, including the construction of the Fox Glacier Hostel in 1928.
