La Gran Piedra is a remarkable natural landmark situated in the Sierra Maestra mountains, approximately 25 kilometers southeast of Santiago de Cuba. This colossal rock formation measures 51 yards in length and 25 to 30 yards in width, with an estimated weight of 63,000 tons. It provides stunning vistas of the surrounding landscape and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site dedicated to the First Coffee Plantations in the South-East of Cuba.
La Gran Piedra is thought to have originated from a volcanic eruption or possibly an underwater volcanic explosion. The area holds historical importance due to its connection to Cuba’s coffee plantation history, with nearby sites like Cafetal Isabelica preserving the remnants of 19th-century coffee plantations.
Visitors can reach La Gran Piedra by taking a taxi or bus from Santiago de Cuba, with the journey typically lasting about an hour, depending on traffic. Upon arrival, visitors must ascend 452 to 459 stone steps to reach the summit.
Entry fees are generally modest, but it is advisable to check with local tour operators or the site directly for the most up-to-date pricing.
