Completed in 1976, the Virgin of the Panecillo statue is inspired by an 18th-century sculpture by Bernardo de Lagarda, a notable artist from the Quito Art School. Constructed from 7,000 aluminum pieces, it boasts a distinctive patchwork design. Although commissioned in 1892, its construction was finalized many years later.
Visitors can reach the Virgin of the Panecillo by driving or taking a taxi. Parking is available at the hilltop, though it may be difficult to find on weekends and holidays. Alternatively, a hike from the Historic Center via stone steps is possible, but caution is advised due to neighborhood safety concerns.
Entry to the museum inside the Virgin is available for a nominal fee of approximately $1.
