Chen Mapo Tofu is a legendary Sichuan eatery in Chengdu, famous for its signature dish mapo tofu — the spicy, numbing tofu that’s become a global icon of Sichuan cuisine. This is one of the oldest and most authentic spots claiming direct lineage to the original creator, “Lady Chen,” who is said to have invented the recipe. It’s Bib Gourmand rated, offering excellent quality and value.
Begin with the mapo tofu — order it “medium spicy” or “very spicy” depending on your tolerance. Pair with plain steamed rice to balance the heat. Try the dumplings or lotus-leaf-wrapped pork for texture contrast. If available, cold dishes (like braised pork or pork skin) make great starters.
Lively, bustling, no frills. Lots of aromas — chili oil, fermented bean paste, pepper. It fills up, especially at dinner time. Upstairs dining to escape the crowd downstairs is a common strategy.
Dishes are very affordable by western standards. Expect most mains like mapo tofu to cost roughly CNY 30-60 (depending on portion size and spice level). Side dishes and dumplings may cost less.
Bring a friend who loves spice—and do the “rice and mapo” combo so you can alternate bites. Sip tea between spoonfuls to clear your palate, and save room for something cooling (pickled veggies or cold tofu) afterward. If possible, eat upstairs to avoid the downstairs rush.
