Background

Following Joaquín Torres García’s passing in 1949, his widow Manolita Piña and family established the museum to preserve and share his artistic and documentary legacy. It opened on July 28, 1955, the artist’s birthday, and has moved several times due to political and institutional challenges. Since 1990, it has been located in a five-story Art Deco building, formerly the Broqua & Scholberg bazaar. The Fundación Torres García oversees the museum, which hosts extensive exhibitions and educational workshops.
