Casapueblo is a renowned cultural and architectural landmark situated in Punta Ballena, Uruguay, close to Punta del Este. This extraordinary, whitewashed structure perched on a cliff was crafted by artist Carlos Páez Vilaró. It functions as a hotel, museum, art gallery, and restaurant, offering stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and mesmerizing sunsets.
Originally the personal residence and studio of Carlos Páez Vilaró, Casapueblo evolved over decades into a vast sculptural complex inspired by Mediterranean architecture and nature. Today, it serves as a museum showcasing Páez Vilaró’s paintings, ceramics, sculptures, and a film about his life. The venue also features a daily “Sun Ceremony” at sunset, with a recorded poem celebrating the sun, which has become a cherished attraction.
Visitors typically travel approximately 15 km west of Punta del Este to reach Punta Ballena. Options include taxis, Uber, or car rentals. Public buses (Codesa’s Línea 8) also operate along the coast, with a stop a short walk from Casapueblo. The drive offers scenic coastal views.
General admission to the museum and art gallery is approximately 300 Uruguayan pesos (around $7 USD), with free entry for children under 12. Tickets can be purchased online to avoid queues. The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. until sunset.
Casapueblo offers a unique blend of art, architecture, and nature, making it a must-visit cultural highlight when traveling in Uruguay.
