The Colonia del Sacramento Lighthouse, located in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay, is a historic site built in 1857 on the remnants of the Convent of San Francisco. The convent, originally constructed around 1690, was destroyed by fire in 1704. The lighthouse, standing 26 meters (85 feet) tall, offers breathtaking views of the Rio de la Plata and, on clear days, the distant skyline of Buenos Aires. It is situated in the city’s historic quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Colonia del Sacramento was founded by the Portuguese in 1680 and became a strategic location contested by Portuguese and Spanish powers. The lighthouse’s construction began in 1845, utilizing the convent’s remaining walls for support, and was completed in 1857 after delays due to civil unrest.
Visitors can reach Colonia del Sacramento, located about 177 kilometers from Montevideo and near Buenos Aires, by road or ferry. The lighthouse is in the Historic Quarter, easily accessible on foot from the city center.
The entrance fee to climb the lighthouse is approximately US$1 to US$2 (around 30 Uruguayan Pesos), granting access to the tower and views, with staff usually assisting visitors during the climb.
This destination offers a rich blend of history, stunning views, and seaside relaxation, making it a highlight for anyone exploring Uruguay’s coastline and colonial heritage.
