Jardín Botánico, officially named Museo y Jardín Botánico Profesor Atilio Lombardo, is a stunning botanical garden located in the El Prado neighborhood of Montevideo, Uruguay. Spanning over 36 hectares, it features more than 1,000 species of native and exotic plants, making it a significant cultural and environmental landmark.
Established on April 17, 1902, the garden was initially designed by French landscaper Carlos Racine, with significant contributions from botanist José Arechavaleta and other prominent figures. It has expanded from just over one hectare to its current size through municipal acquisitions and donations. The garden serves as both a park and a center for botanical education and research, complete with a museum and herbarium.
Visitors can reach Jardín Botánico with a 30-minute bus ride from central Montevideo to the Prado area. Located at Avenida 19 de Abril 1181, it is accessible by public transport or taxi.
The garden features themed sections showcasing native Uruguayan plants and international flora, a serene frog pond near the Japanese Garden, seasonal flower greenhouses, butterfly rooms, and artistic sculptures. The peaceful pathways are perfect for leisurely walks, birdwatching, and photography, especially during spring and autumn.
Admission to Jardín Botánico is free, making it a family-friendly destination. The garden is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with last entry at 6:30 p.m. The museum operates Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
