The Amethyst Hot Springs in New Zealand is a hidden treasure along the Wanganui River, offering a peaceful and natural hot spring experience. This secluded spot is one of the few easily accessible natural hot springs on the South Island, making it a unique destination for those seeking tranquility and adventure.
The Amethyst Hot Springs have been a well-kept local secret, rarely mentioned in mainstream guidebooks. The area is prone to flooding, which can change the landscape and the condition of the pools. Despite these challenges, the springs remain a cherished spot for those who find them.
To reach the Amethyst Hot Springs, start at the road-end sign for the Wanganui Valley. Follow the path along the top of the bluff, then go through some bush and onto the closed road until you reach the Amethyst Stream bridge. Cross the bridge and walk exactly 200 meters before taking the path on the right down to the Wanganui Riverbed. The springs are located to the right, halfway to the mouth of the Amethyst Stream.
There are no tickets required to visit the Amethyst Hot Springs. It is a free, natural attraction.
