Located approximately 50 kilometers east of Antalya in southern Turkey, the Aspendos Roman Theater is a remarkable ancient site. Known for its exceptional preservation, this theater is one of the finest examples of Roman architecture. Constructed during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius in the 2nd century AD, it boasts outstanding acoustics and intricate architectural features.
The history of the Aspendos Roman Theater is closely linked to the city of Aspendos, originally established by the Greeks and later thriving under Roman governance. Designed by the Greek architect Zenon and financed by two affluent brothers, the theater has hosted various performances over the centuries, including gladiatorial games and cultural events. In the 13th century, the Seljuks repurposed part of the theater into a palace.
Visitors can reach the Aspendos Roman Theater by taking minibuses (Dolmus) from Antalya or Side, disembarking at the Aspendos junction, and walking approximately 4 kilometers. Alternatively, renting a car offers a more comfortable travel option.
The nearby Upper City also features additional historical sites such as the Acropolis and a nymphaeum.
Ticket prices and visiting hours can vary, so it is recommended to check the official museum website for the latest information. An audio guide is suggested due to the limited signage available on-site.
