Known as the “Lake of Seven Colors,” Bacalar Lagoon is an enchanting body of water nestled in Quintana Roo, Mexico’s southernmost state. Its mesmerizing hues of blues and greens are derived from its white limestone bed, making it a must-visit destination.
Bacalar Lagoon holds a rich history tracing back to the ancient Mayans, who considered it a significant hub for commerce and transportation. In the 17th century, it became a hotspot for pirates. Today, Bacalar Lagoon is a serene getaway that harmonizes history, nature, and beauty.
To reach Bacalar, travelers can fly into Chetumal International Airport and then take a 45-minute car ride to Bacalar town. Another option is flying to Cancun and taking a 4-hour bus transfer or renting a car for a 3-hour drive.
While entry to Bacalar town and the lagoon are free, some eco-parks around the lagoon may charge a nominal entry fee, usually between 50-200 MXN ($2-$10). Private boat tours range from 800-2000 MXN ($40-$100) based on duration and amenities.
