The “Back Door” hike to Petra is an off-the-beaten-path trail for intrepid explorers looking for an adventurous entry to the renowned ancient city of Petra, in Jordan. This trek, also referred to as “Petra Through the Back Door,” takes you via less-traveled routes, offering stunning views and a more peaceful experience than the main entrance. Most people come through the front/main entrance so doing it this way you will beat everyone to the monastery if you start the hike early. Along the hike there is amazing scenery and places to stop and have a tea from locals selling it on the trail.
Petra’s “Back Door” route follows ancient Nabataean paths used by the inhabitants of the city thousands of years ago. The trail does not hold historical significance per se, but the historical relevance of the site it leads to, Petra, is unparalleled.
The trail begins at the village of Little Petra, located about 8 kilometers north of Petra’s main entrance. Getting to Little Petra usually involves a short taxi ride from the town of Wadi Musa. From there you will probably want to pay one of the 4×4 taxis to take you to the trailhead. It should be like $17 (12 JD).
While there’s no charge for the hike itself, entry into Petra requires a ticket. Non-Jordanians can purchase a one-day pass for 50 JD, a two-day pass for 55 JD, or a three-day pass for 60 JD. Reduced rates apply for Jordanians and residents. You will also need to pay the 4×4 taxi if you choose to do that option to the trailhead. It will cost around 12 JD.
