In the heart of Marfa, Texas, the historic Building 98 is an enchanting destination for art lovers. Known for its colorful background as the World War II-era Officers’ Club for Fort D.A. Russell, today it houses the International Woman’s Foundation and provides a unique showcase of vibrant murals, artistic performances, and fascinating history.
Originally built in 1911 as military quarters, Building 98 was transformed into a hub of social activities during World War II. The spotlight of the building is the fresco mural in the barroom, painted by German prisoners of war who were artists. After the base was deactivated, the building fell into disrepair, until it was purchased in 2003 and became the center of the International Woman’s Foundation’s activities.
Building 98 is located at Fort D. A. Russell, just west of Marfa’s city center on West San Antonio Street. The nearest major airport is Midland International Air and Space Port, a three-hour drive away.
There’s no regular admission fee to enter, but donations are greatly appreciated for upkeep and continuing operations. Some special exhibitions and events may have admission costs which will be stated on the venue’s website or at the entrance.
