Located in tropical North Queensland, Australia, Cape Tribulation is a remote and stunning destination known for its unique combination of the world’s oldest rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. This area is a haven for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. The region is steeped in history and culture, with indigenous First Nations people having inhabited the area for thousands of years.
The name “”Cape Tribulation”” was coined by Captain James Cook in 1770 after his ship, the Endeavour, encountered difficulties on the Endeavour Reef. Cook’s diary entries from that period reflect the challenges he faced, leading him to name the area Cape Tribulation as it marked the start of their troubles. The region remained largely untouched until the 1930s when the Mason family attempted to settle there. In 1962, a gravel road was constructed from the Daintree River to Cape Tribulation, and by 1983, a road was built from Cape Tribulation to Cooktown. The area was recognized as part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area in 1988.
To reach Cape Tribulation, travel approximately 110 kilometers south of Cairns along the coastline. You’ll cross the Daintree River by ferry, a scenic and memorable part of your journey. The drive offers breathtaking coastal views, setting the stage for your rainforest adventure.
No specific tickets are required to visit Cape Tribulation. However, guided tours can be booked through local operators like Cape Trib Connections, offering comprehensive day tours that include visits to Mossman Gorge and other attractions.
