Carlsbad Caverns National Park is a stunning natural wonder in southeastern New Mexico. Known for its incredible underground caverns, unique rock formations, and diverse wildlife, it’s a must-visit for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Visitors can explore the caverns through self-guided tours or ranger-led expeditions.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park was established in 1930 to protect the vast underground limestone cave system. The main attraction, Carlsbad Cavern, is one of the largest cave chambers in North America, featuring the Big Room, which is over 4,000 feet long, 625 feet wide, and 255 feet high. The park also includes other caves like Slaughter Canyon Cave and offers various guided tours to explore these hidden wonders.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park is about 18 miles southwest of Carlsbad, New Mexico, on US Highway 62/180. It’s easily accessible by car, and visitors can also plan their trip using electric vehicles, though charging options nearby are limited. Whites City, a small gateway community just outside the park, offers lodging, food, and gas services, making it a convenient starting point for your visit.

Tips for Visiting

1. Plan Ahead: Book your reservations and timed entry tickets well in advance, especially during peak season.
2. Dress Appropriately: Wear comfortable shoes and layers, as the temperature underground remains around 56 degrees Fahrenheit year-round.
3. Bring a Light Jacket: The cool, humid air in the caverns can be chilly, so bring a light jacket if needed.
4. No Pets or Strollers: The park is not pet-friendly, and strollers are not recommended due to the uneven terrain.
5. Food Options: Food is available on site and in nearby Whites City, but hours are limited. The city of Carlsbad offers a variety of dining options within a 20-30 minute drive.
6. Charge Your EV: If you’re visiting with an electric vehicle, plan your charging stops in advance, as options are limited near the park. Whites City has an RV park with charging facilities, but it may charge extra for EV charging.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park offers a unique blend of natural beauty and adventure, making it an unforgettable destination for travelers. Whether you’re exploring the caverns, watching the bats, or hiking through the canyon, this park has something for everyone.
