History

Founded in the 11th century by Queen Margaret, the abbey was initially a priory. The Abbey Church that stands today was built in the 12th century by King David I and houses the tombs of several Scottish monarchs including Robert the Bruce. The adjoining palace was constructed in the 16th century and was favoured by monarchs of the Stuart dynasty.

Dunfermline Abbey and Palace is located in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. The town can be reached by train from Edinburgh or Glasgow. From Dunfermline station, the Abbey is a brief 10-minute walk. By car, it’s roughly a 30-minute drive from Edinburgh.
