History

Dysert O’Dea Castle was built in 1480 by Diarmuid O’Dea, Lord of Cineal Fearmaic. The castle suffered significant damage during the Cromwellian invasion in 1651. After being repaired and re-opened in 1986, it now serves as the home of the Clare Archaeology Centre. The castle’s history is deeply intertwined with that of the O’Dea clan, who have played a significant role in Irish history.

How to Get There

Dysert O’Dea Castle is located 5 kilometers south of Corofin and 11 kilometers north of Ennis. To reach the castle from Ennis, take the N85 northwest and then turn right onto R476 towards Corofin. After 6 kilometers, turn left at the crossroads and follow the signposts to the castle. There is free coach and car parking available on the grounds.
