The Egyptian Bazaar, also known as the Spice Bazaar, is a lively and historic marketplace in Istanbul. Situated in the Eminönü district, it offers a rich cultural experience with its diverse selection of spices, sweets, and souvenirs. This bazaar is a must-see for anyone interested in exploring the city’s traditional markets.
Established in 1660 with funds from the Ottoman district of Egypt, the Egyptian Bazaar earned its name from its origins. Initially a hub for goods imported from Egypt, it gradually became known as the Spice Bazaar due to the variety of spices and goods available. The bazaar has a storied history as a trading center and has been reconstructed after fires in 1691 and 1940, with recent renovations completed in 2018.
Visitors can access the Egyptian Bazaar through various transportation options. The T1 tram line is convenient for those staying in areas like Sultanahmet or Karaköy; simply take the tram towards BačŸcč±lar and get off at Eminönü station, which is a short walk from the bazaar. Alternatively, the M2 metro line can be used from Taksim, with a transfer to the T1 tram at Laleli-Üniversite station. Ferries from the Asian side, such as Kadč±köy or Üsküdar, offer a scenic route to Eminönü. Taxis or ride-sharing services are also available for a direct trip.
There is no entrance fee to visit the Egyptian Bazaar. It is open daily from 8 AM to 7:30 PM during summer and from 8 AM to 7 PM during winter, except on national holidays.
