Glebe House was originally known as St Columb’s and was the home of Derek Hill for nearly thirty years. Hill, an English artist, fell in love with Donegal while painting the portrait of Henry McIlhenny, who owned nearby Glenveagh Castle. Hill decorated the house with exquisite William Morris textiles, Islamic and Japanese art, and an impressive collection of over 300 works by leading twentieth-century artists, including Picasso and Kokoshka. The house and its contents were generously left to the Irish nation by Hill, ensuring that the collection remains intact and displayed as he originally intended.
