Introduction

The Horizontal Falls, often referred to as ‘Horries’, is one of Australia’s most spectacular natural phenomena. Located in the remote Kimberley region of Western Australia, it’s one of the few places on earth where waterfalls operate horizontally, earning it the title “Australia’s most unusual natural wonder”.

History

Described by Sir David Attenborough as “one of the greatest natural wonders of the world,” the Horizontal Falls were formed over billions of years. Massive tidal movements caused by the gravitational pull of the moon on the ocean create a unique and dramatic waterfall effect in the narrow coastal gorges.

How to Get There

Horizontal Falls is situated between the McLarty Ranges and the Buccaneer Archipelago. It’s accessible either by seaplane from Broome or Derby, or by joining a fast boat tour from the nearby coastal town of Broome. The Falls cannot be reached by road due to their remote location.

Attractions

  • Experience the adrenaline rush of riding through the falls in a fast boat, one of the most thrilling water adventures in Australia.
  • Enjoy the scintillating aerial views of the falls and the rugged Kimberley landscape on a scenic flight.
  • Explore the untouched biodiversity of the surrounding marine park, home to a vast array of marine and bird life.

Ticket Information

Ticket prices vary based on the tour operator and the type of experience. Prices typically start from around AUD$800 for a half-day tour including scenic flights and a boat ride through the falls. It’s advisable to check prices and book in advance due to the limited availability.

Tips for Visiting

  • As the Horizontal Falls are greatly affected by the tides, it’s best to visit during a full moon or new moon phase.
  • Apply plenty of sun protection and stay hydrated, as the temperatures in the Kimberley region can get quite high.
  • Always adhere strictly to the safety guidelines issued by tour operators, as the falls are powerful and can be dangerous.
  • Keep an eye out for wildlife like sharks, turtles, and a variety of bird species during your visit.
