Sermeq Kujalleq, also known as Jakobshavn Glacier, is a remarkable natural wonder in Greenland. Situated approximately 250 km north of the Arctic Circle, it is one of the most dynamic and rapidly moving glaciers in the world, contributing over 35 km³ of ice annually to the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
For over 250 years, Sermeq Kujalleq has been a focal point for studies on climate change and glaciology. Historically, the glacier advanced until 1851, but it has since experienced significant retreat. A notable event occurred in 2002 when the ice front disintegrated, leading to a swift retreat.
To reach Sermeq Kujalleq, fly into Ilulissat Airport. From there, you can enjoy scenic flights or helicopter tours for the best views of the glacier. Alternatively, explore the glacier’s downstream effects at the Ilulissat Icefjord, accessible by land or boat.
Tour prices vary, with a typical day tour starting around EUR 124. Scenic flights and helicopter tours are more costly but provide unparalleled perspectives.
