Kanchanaburi War Cemetery stands as a significant historical site in Thailand, particularly for those interested in the events of World War II. This well-maintained cemetery, overseen by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, is the final resting place for 6,982 Allied prisoners of war who perished during the construction of the infamous Death Railway. It serves as a solemn tribute to the sacrifices made during the war and a place for reflection and remembrance.
The cemetery was established by the Army Graves Service to consolidate graves from various locations along the southern section of the Burma-Siam railway, transferring them from Bangkok to Nieke. The remains of those who died during the railway’s construction were moved from camp burial sites and isolated areas into three cemeteries: Kanchanaburi and Chungkai in Thailand, and Thanbyuzayat in Myanmar. While the remains of American POWs were returned to their homeland, the others were interred here. Additionally, the cemetery honors 11 soldiers from the army of undivided India, whose graves are located in Muslim cemeteries across Thailand.
Kanchanaburi War Cemetery is situated in the town of Kanchanaburi, approximately 129 kilometers northwest of Bangkok. The most straightforward way to reach the cemetery is by road via the National Highway from Bangkok. Alternatively, visitors can opt for bus or train services from the capital. The cemetery is conveniently located next to Saeng Chuto Road, the main thoroughfare in the town, with clear signage to guide visitors.
Visiting Kanchanaburi War Cemetery is free of charge. The cemetery is open from 8 AM to 5 PM on weekdays and from 8 AM to 12 PM on Saturdays.
Kanchanaburi War Cemetery is a deeply moving and historically important site that provides insight into the sacrifices made during World War II. It is an essential destination for anyone with an interest in history and remembrance.
