Memorial Church of the Holy Spirit

The Memorial Church of the Holy Spirit in Javorca is a stunning World War I memorial that combines Art Nouveau style with a sense of solemn remembrance. It was awarded the European Heritage Label in 2018 and stands as a tribute to the Austro-Hungarian soldiers who lost their lives in the Isonzo battles. Located in Slovenia’s Triglav National Park, it is a symbol of peace that welcomes visitors from all walks of life.

History

Constructed in 1916 by Austro-Hungarian soldiers amidst ongoing battles, the church was a joint effort led by Vienna artist Remigus Geyling, Hungarian supervisor Géza Jablonszky, and Tyrolean woodcarver Anton Perathoner. Despite enduring border changes, fascist and communist regimes, and a 1998 earthquake, it continues to symbolize unity, hosting both Catholic and Orthodox masses each year.
