The Museo de las Memorias, also known as the Museum of Memories, is a poignant reminder of Paraguay’s past. Located in the capital city of Asunción, the museum is housed in what used to be a detention center during the country’s dictatorship under the rule of Alfredo Stroessner. Today, it serves as a monument to resilience and a tool for educating visitors about the importance of human rights.
The building of the museum was originally used as the “Técnica” detention and torture center by Stroessner’s regime (1954 – 1989). After the fall of the dictatorship, it was decided to convert this significant space into a museum in 2007 to commemorate the victims of state terror and to serve as a testament to Paraguay’s history.
Museo de las Memorias is located in the central part of Asunción and is accessible via taxi, bus, or on foot if you’re already exploring the city center. The address of the museum is Chile 1063 Esq. Manduvirá, Asunción, Paraguay.
The museum is open to the public from Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 5:00 pm. Admission is free of charge, but the museum welcomes donations to support its operations and preservation efforts.
