Located in Montevideo, Uruguay, the Museo del Carnaval is a lively cultural institution dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of the rich history and traditions of the Uruguayan carnival. The museum provides a unique perspective through displays of costumes, masks, performance videos, and historical artifacts, with a special focus on the murgas and candombe traditions.
Opened in November 2006, the museum is situated in former warehouses in Ciudad Vieja, Montevideo’s historic district near the port and Mercado del Puerto. Inside, a cobblestone street symbolizes the carnival’s essence as a neighborhood street celebration, and there is an open garden café area. Visitors can reach the museum by taxi, ride-sharing, or public transportation within Montevideo. The address is Rambla 25 de Agosto de 1825 Nº 218, corner Maciel in Ciudad Vieja. Due to limited parking, public transport is recommended.
Admission is free for children aged 0 to 11, while general admission costs around UYU 150. The museum is open Wednesday to Sunday, from 11:00 to 17:00 hours, and is closed on Monday and Tuesday, except for group visits which can be booked in advance.
Museo del Carnaval is a compact yet deeply engaging museum, perfect for travelers interested in exploring Uruguay’s vibrant carnival culture and its historical importance.
