Introduction

Parque Nacional Alerce Andino, situated in Chile’s Los Lagos region, is an essential destination for those who appreciate nature and seek adventure. This national park is famous for its breathtaking landscapes, rich biodiversity, and the ancient alerce trees, some of which have lived for over 3,000 years.

History

Established on November 17, 1982, through Supreme Decree 735 from the Ministry of National Assets, Alerce Andino National Park was created to safeguard the unique ecosystem found within the Temperate Rainforest Biosphere Reserve of the Southern Andes. The park derives its name from the ancient larch trees that are a significant feature of the area.

How to Get There

Accessing Parque Nacional Alerce Andino is straightforward from Puerto Montt, which boasts the most convenient airport for exploring Chile’s Lake District. The park has three entrances: two in the north at Correntoso and Sargazo, and one in the south at the Chaica sector. From Puerto Montt, take Route 7 towards Chamiza, then turn left onto V-65 towards Correntoso. For the Sargazo sector, continue from Correntoso for an additional 1.5 miles. The southern entrance can be reached by following the coastal road south from Puerto Montt and turning off at Lenca.

If you’re traveling from the south along the Carretera Austral, you will need to take two car ferries: from Caleta Gonzalo to Hornopirén (operating twice daily in high season, taking about six hours) and then a 30-minute crossing of the Reloncaví Sound between Puelche and La Arena, from where it is 60 km to the park entrance near Lenca.
