Located at the heart of the Westfjords, Patreksfjörður is a picturesque harbour town with diverse offerings. From its rich sea life to the nearby natural wonders, the town is the perfect base for exploring the majestic Westfjords region of Iceland.
Name after St. Patrick, the guardian saint of its Irish settlers, Patreksfjörður has flourished as a fishing village over centuries. Today, it’s the largest populated area in the southern part of Westfjords, reflecting a blend of old heritage and modern comfort.
Patreksfjörður is a roughly 5-hour drive from Reykjavik. Take Route 1 and turn onto Route 60 at the Búðardalur junction. Continue on Route 62 and then turn onto Route 63. Alternatively, one can fly to the nearby airport at Bíldudalur.
The charming town itself offers a stunning bay view and good basic services including a pool, restaurants, and accommodations. Not too far are the area’s main attractions like Látrabjarg cliffs, Europe’s largest bird cliff, and the pristine Rauðasandur red sand beach. The nearby Westfjords Heritage Museum gives an insight into the region’s past.
Visiting Patreksfjörður harbour and its surroundings is free of charge. However, certain attractions nearby, like cultural institutions or guided tours, may require an entrance fee or a booking respectively.
