Located in the serene Yellowstone National Park, the Petrified Tree stands as a fascinating testament to the power of nature. This unique attraction offers a mesmerizing look into the park’s ancient history and the geological processes of petrification.
Standing at over 30 feet tall, the Petrified Tree is believed to be over 50 million years old. Its existence is a testament to Yellowstone’s volcanic past. The tree was encased in volcanic ash and, over time, the organic matter was replaced with minerals like silica, transforming it into a stone-like structure.
The Petrified Tree is located near the Tower-Roosevelt area of the park. To reach it, visitors can take the Northeast Entrance Road from the park’s entrance to the Tower-Roosevelt Junction, then head west. The Petrified Tree is only a short drive from the junction.
Access to the Petrified Tree is included in the admission to Yellowstone National Park. As of 2022, the entrance fee for a private, non-commercial vehicle is $35. This ticket grants the visitor access to the park for seven days.
