How to Get There

To visit Petrovaradin Fortress, you can cross the Danube River via the Varadin bridge and head right towards the fortress. Entry is free, although there is a fee for the museum. If you’re interested in the underground tunnels, you’ll need to join a guided tour.

1. Clock Tower: The clock tower is quite unique, with its hour hand longer than the minute hand. This design was meant to help Danube boaters see the time from afar. Interestingly, the clock runs slower in hot weather and faster when it’s cold.
2. Underground Tunnels: The fortress has an extensive network of underground tunnels, known as the “”Catacombs,”” which span over 20 kilometers across four levels. Each level is marked by a different color, creating a maze of dark passageways.
3. Kaiser Well: At the bottom of the fourth (black) level, you’ll find the Kaiser Well, which is said to have been used by Austrian Emperor Joseph II. There’s even a legend about buried treasure near the fortress.
4. Art Park: At the top of the fortress, there’s an art park with various restaurants and bars, highlighting the vibrant cultural scene of Novi Sad.
5. EXIT Music Festival: Every July, the fortress hosts the famous EXIT music festival, drawing over 150,000 visitors from around the globe.

While entry to Petrovaradin Fortress is free, there is a charge for the museum. Guided tours of the underground tunnels are available, but they weren’t running during my visit.
