The Pinang Peranakan Mansion in George Town, Penang, is a beautifully restored 19th-century Chinese courtyard house that highlights the rich Peranakan (Straits Chinese) culture. Now a museum, it features over 1,000 antiques, offering a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of wealthy Peranakan families during the colonial period.

History

Constructed in the 1890s by the Chinese tycoon Kapitan Chung Keng Quee, who led the Hai San secret society, the mansion combines Chinese architectural styles with European elements like Scottish ironworks and French windows. Originally called *Hai Kee Chan* or “”Sea Remembrance Hall,”” it was neglected after WWII but was transformed into a museum in the 1990s.

How to Get There

Located at 29 Church Street, George Town, the mansion is easily reachable by ride-hailing services like Grab or taxis from central Georgetown, taking about 5–10 minutes. It’s also a 10–15 minute walk from nearby heritage sites such as the Kapitan Keling Mosque.
