The Puente Ondulado, also known as the Leonel Viera Bridge or Puente de La Barra, is a remarkable wavy concrete bridge connecting Punta del Este and La Barra over the Maldonado Creek in Uruguay. Renowned for its unique undulating design, it stands as a significant architectural landmark in the region.
Designed and built by Leonel Viera, a self-taught builder, the bridge was inaugurated in 1965. It was the first of its kind to use a stressed ribbon technique with concrete segments, becoming an iconic structure in the area. Previous bridges at this location were destroyed by natural events before this innovative design was implemented. The bridge played a crucial role in the expansion of the Punta del Este area and is celebrated in literature, including a poem by Pablo Neruda dedicated to its form.
The Puente Ondulado is accessible by car or bus along Route 10, crossing the Maldonado Creek between Punta del Este and La Barra. Visitors from Punta del Este can drive or take public transport heading northeast; it is a short trip to the bridge from central Punta del Este.
There is no fee to visit or cross the Puente Ondulado. It is a public vehicular and pedestrian bridge.
The Puente Ondulado remains a must-see engineering and cultural landmark representing Uruguay’s coastal beauty and innovative construction.
