Refugio Paz de Las Aves is a 25-hectare private nature reserve situated in the western foothills of the Ecuadorian Andes, near the equator at an elevation of 1,969 meters. Positioned between Mindo parish and Nanegalito, the reserve features a combination of grassland and secondary forest, along with 10 hectares of primary forest.
The sanctuary’s history began when brothers Ángel and Rodrigo Paz transformed their parents’ land into a haven for Ecuador’s diverse bird species. A recent successful fundraising effort has secured the land’s protection for future generations.
Travelers usually fly into Quito, Ecuador’s capital, and then take a bus or taxi to Mindo, which is about a two-hour trip. From Mindo, the reserve can be reached by taxi or through a guided tour.
The reserve is home to over 430 bird species, including six antpitta species, the Andean cock-of-the-rock, dark-backed wood-quail, and lyre-tailed nightjar. Visitors can also enjoy hummingbird feeders located at the forest’s edge.
Entrance fees generally include guided tours, which are highly recommended to enhance birdwatching experiences. Ticket details may vary.
