Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve is a stunning natural area situated in southern Peru, approximately 110 kilometers northeast of Arequipa. Covering over 350,000 hectares, this reserve was established in 1979 to safeguard the vicuña, which is recognized as Peru’s national animal, along with its habitat. The reserve showcases a variety of natural landscapes, including wetlands, meadows, thermal springs, salt lakes, and volcanoes, making it one of the most remarkable ecosystems in the region.
The Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve was created to preserve the area’s natural resources and landscapes. Its main goal is to ensure optimal environmental conditions for the populations of vicuña, taruca, common parihuana, Andean parihuana, and James parihuana. Additionally, the reserve aims to protect the queñal forests, which are vital for the survival of these endangered species. The reserve is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including 158 bird species, 37 mammal species, and 358 plant species.
The reserve is conveniently reachable from Arequipa. Most tours begin in the early morning, allowing visitors to return to Arequipa for lunch. The journey typically takes around two hours, and travelers can opt for a guided tour or rent a car for greater flexibility. The northern route from Arequipa to Colca Canyon passes through the northern edge of the reserve, while the southern road leads directly to Laguna de Salinas and other attractions in the southern and eastern parts of the reserve.
The cost for a one-day tour is around 200 Peruvian soles (approximately 62 US dollars), which includes transportation, entrance fees, a tour guide, and a first aid kit. Visitors are required to be accompanied by an authorized tour guide and must follow the designated paths within the reserve.
Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve is an essential destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Its unique combination of natural beauty, diverse wildlife, and historical significance promises an unforgettable experience in Peru.
