Teatro Solís, located in Montevideo, Uruguay, is a magnificent neoclassical theater that opened its doors in 1856. Designed by Italian architect Carlo Zucchi, it stands as Uruguay’s oldest and most renowned cultural venue, situated adjacent to Plaza Independencia in the historic Old Town district.
In the 1830s, prominent citizens of Montevideo envisioned a cultural center that could compete with those in European cities, serving as a symbol of social and political expression. Construction commenced in 1840 following government approval, though it faced delays due to war and logistical challenges, including the importation of timber and marble from Europe. The theater officially opened on August 25, 1856, with a performance of Verdi’s opera Ernani. Throughout its history, it has hosted performances by esteemed international artists and premiered Uruguay’s first national opera, La Parisina, in 1878.
Visitors can reach Teatro Solís by walking or using public transportation to Montevideo’s Plaza Independencia, as it is conveniently located on Buenos Aires street at the corner of Bartolomé Mitre. The theater is easily accessible from various parts of the city.
Tickets for performances can be purchased online or at the box office. Guided tours are available daily except Mondays, typically during daytime hours. Evening shows are scheduled from Tuesday through Sunday.
