The Bachkovo Monastery is one of the oldest and largest Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Bulgaria, founded in 1083. It has a rich history and has been a center of culture and spirituality for centuries. The strategic location and natural protection of the Asen’s fortress – impenetrable from three sides – was used as early as the time of the Thracians, who built a fortification in the 5th century BC. The Asen fortress was expanded and strengthened in 1231, during the reign of Tsar Ivan Asen II, whose name it bears. Historical Museum-Asenovgrad preserves history and presents it in its exhibition space chronologically – from the Paleolithic to the present day.
The Bachkovo Monastery is located about 10 kilometers south of the city of Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Asenovgrad-Bachkovo-9 km. Visitors can easily reach the monastery and Asenovgrad by car or public transportation from Plovdiv.
