Perched on a hilltop with breathtaking views of the Jordan Valley, Sea of Galilee, and the Golan Heights, Umm Qais is a mesmerizing archaeological site in Northwestern Jordan. Its rich collection of Greco-Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman ruins capture the essence of numerous civilizations throughout history.
Originally known as Gadara, Umm Qais was one of the ancient Decapolis cities during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Over the centuries, it was home to several civilizations, each leaving their imprint. Its Ottoman-era village, sitting atop the ancient ruins, adds to its historical charm.
Umm Qais lies about 110 kilometers north of Amman, an approximately 2-hour drive. Visitors can access Umm Qais by private or rental vehicle. Public transportation like busses are available to Irbid from Amman, from where a taxi can be hired.
The entry fee for Umm Qais is around 5 JD for non-Jordanians. For Jordanians, students, and children, the ticket fee is reduced.
