Introduction

Undara Volcanic National Park is a captivating destination for those passionate about nature and adventure. Situated in Queensland’s Gulf Savannah region, it offers a unique experience with its remarkable geological structures and rich biodiversity. The park is renowned for housing the world’s oldest lava tube system, allowing visitors to delve into ancient volcanic terrains.

History

Established in 2009, the park aims to preserve Australia’s longest lava tube and the distinctive flora and fauna of the area. The name “”Undara”” is derived from an Aboriginal term meaning “”a long way,”” highlighting the park’s expansive and remote nature. Before becoming a national park, the land was used for cattle grazing and was recognized for its lava tubes as early as 1891. Guided tours began in 1989, and today, the park is managed to safeguard its geological significance while improving visitor amenities.

How to Get There

Undara Volcanic National Park is conveniently located about 250 kilometers southwest of Cairns. From Brisbane, it is approximately 1,700 kilometers, or an 18-hour drive. The road leading to Undara Discovery Resort is fully paved, making it accessible by car. For those heading to the Kalkani day-use area for hiking, the road is unsealed but manageable with a 2WD vehicle.
