Tucked in the lush landscape of the Columbia River Gorge, Wahkeena Falls is an exotic beauty that cascades down vibrant, mossy cliffs. This guide will aid in planning your visit to this spectacular Oregon gem and the surrounding attractions.

History

Wahkeena Falls, meaning “most beautiful” in Yakama Indian language, truly lives up to its name. Historically appreciated for its picturesque scenery, this 242-foot waterfall doesn’t drop directly to the ground, but rather slides down in a serpentine flow.

How to Get There

Just a 40-minute drive eastwards from Portland and less than half a mile from Multnomah Falls, Wahkeena Falls can be reached via the Historic Columbia River Highway.

List of Attractions

  • The charming Wahkeena Falls, visible from the highway, but best viewed from the stone bridge crossing its lower reaches.
  • The Wahkeena loop trail, a wonderful 4.6-mile hike that includes other beautiful waterfalls.
  • Fairy Falls: an enchanting, fan-shaped waterfall along the Wahkeena loop trail.
  • The picnic area near the falls, perfect for a scenic outdoor meal.

Ticket Information

There’s no entrance fee to visit the falls. However, ensure you check for any parking permits required.

Tips for Visiting

  • Wear sturdy hiking shoes as the trail can be steep and slippery.
  • For a full experience, take the Wahkeena loop trail to make the most of your visit.
  • Bring water and snacks for your hike.
  • Remember to dress appropriately for weather conditions.
