Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is a place you just have to see if you’re into geothermal landscapes. Nestled in New Zealand’s Taupo Volcanic Zone, it’s a cool mix of natural beauty and scientific intrigue.
The name “Wai-O-Tapu” translates to “sacred waters” in Maori. It’s been drawing tourists since the early 1900s and became a scenic reserve in 1931. In 2012, Te Arawa Group Holdings, a local Maori tribal business, took over the site.
You can drive to Wai-O-Tapu from Rotorua, which takes about 20 minutes. If you don’t have a car, there’s a handy shuttle service from Rotorua’s i-SITE Visitor Information Centre.
Other cool spots include bubbling mud pools, steaming caves, and wide views of volcanic craters and sinter terraces.
You can buy tickets on-site, and there’s a shuttle package if you’re coming from Rotorua. The place is cashless, so bring your credit card or EFTPOS.
