Wat Chedi Luang, often referred to as the “”Temple of the Big Stupa,”” is an essential destination in Chiang Mai, Thailand. History

Constructed during the reign of King Saen Muang Ma in the late 14th century, Wat Chedi Luang has seen numerous renovations and expansions over the centuries, particularly in the mid-14th century. The temple’s most remarkable feature is its enormous chedi, originally reaching a height of 85 meters to house the ashes of King Saen Muang Ma’s father. Although an earthquake in 1545 reduced its height to approximately 60 meters, the chedi continues to be an awe-inspiring sight. Historically, the temple was also the home of the Emerald Buddha, one of Thailand’s most sacred relics, before it was relocated to the Grand Palace in Bangkok.

How to Get There

Wat Chedi Luang is conveniently situated in the center of Chiang Mai’s Old City. The easiest way to reach the temple is by taking a red two-line truck. Simply inform the driver that you wish to go to Wat Chedi Luang, and they will charge you based on the route taken.

• The Chedi: The central and most striking structure of the temple complex, the chedi is a massive pagoda that once ranked among the tallest buildings in the ancient Lanna Kingdom. It features four sides with staircases leading to niches that house Buddha images, adorned with mythical Naga serpents and stone elephants.
• Viharn Luang: This larger viharn, reconstructed in 1928 after a fire, showcases a grand multi-tiered roof and an ornate façade embellished with gold leaf and intricate carvings. It houses the Phra Chao Attarot, a towering standing Buddha image from the 14th century, surrounded by murals depicting the Buddha’s life and the Jataka tales.
• Viharn Lai Kham: Although smaller than Viharn Luang, Viharn Lai Kham is another important structure within the temple grounds, known for its beautiful architecture and serving as a venue for smaller ceremonies and events.
• The Sao Inthakin: This small building contains the City Pillar, believed to safeguard the city. Accompanied by three large Dipterocarp trees, it plays a central role in annual ceremonies aimed at ensuring the prosperity and well-being of Chiang Mai.
• The Reclining Buddha: A small shed within the temple grounds features a Reclining Buddha image, adding to the spiritual ambiance of the site.
• Monk Chat Program: Visitors can engage in the Monk Chat program, available daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., where they can converse with monks about Buddhism, monk life, and Thai culture.

Entry to Wat Chedi Luang is free, allowing visitors to explore its ancient ruins and various structures without any charge. The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, making it accessible throughout the day.
