Kraanlei is a delightful waterfront area in Ghent, Belgium, offering a peek into the city’s historical charm and scenic beauty. The name “Kraanlei” means “Crane Place,” a nod to the cranes once used for unloading cargo from barges. Today, it’s a peaceful place known for its 19th-century fountains and historic buildings.
Originally called Ajuinlei or “The Onion Place,” Kraanlei was a hub for onion sales until the 1940s. The cranes, inspired by Archimedes’ designs, highlight its role in the city’s trade.
Kraanlei is a short walk from Ghent’s main historic squares, located to the north, offering a quieter alternative to Graslei.
Visiting Kraanlei is free as it is a public space.
