Situated in the Westfjords region in the north-west of Iceland, Hornstrandir Nature Reserve is an untouched paradise for nature lovers. Known for its steep cliffs, extraordinary panoramic views, and lush vegetation, it’s an ideal destination for those looking for solitude and tranquility.
Established in 1975, Hornstrandir Nature Reserve is an area of 58,000 hectares that was once home to farming communities until the 1950s. Now, it remains uninhabited with only ruins of farms and abandoned buildings articulating human history.
Since there are no roads to Hornstrandir, access is only possible by ferries running from Ísafjörður and Bolungarvík during the summer months. Visitors arrive at one of the small bays, Hesteyri or Saebol, and from there, explore the reserve on foot.
Entrance to Hornstrandir Nature Reserve is free, but the ferries to get there have varying rates depending on the season and operator. It’s advised to check prices and book your tickets in advance.
