History
Established in 1975, Hornstrandir Nature Reserve is an area of 58,000 hectares that was once home to farming communities until the 1950s. Now, it remains uninhabited with only ruins of farms and abandoned buildings articulating human history.
How to get there
Since there are no roads to Hornstrandir, access is only possible by ferries running from Ísafjörður and Bolungarvík during the summer months. Visitors arrive at one of the small bays, Hesteyri or Saebol, and from there, explore the reserve on foot.
