Osaka Castle is a must-see spot for anyone visiting Osaka. This guide will help you explore its history, attractions, and practical tips to make your visit unforgettable.
Osaka Castle’s construction started in 1583 on the site of the former Ishiyama Honganji Temple, which Oda Nobunaga had destroyed 13 years earlier. Toyotomi Hideyoshi wanted it to be the center of a unified Japan under his rule. After Hideyoshi’s death, Tokugawa forces destroyed the castle in 1615, ending the Toyotomi lineage. Tokugawa Hidetada rebuilt it in the 1620s, but it burned down in 1665 after a lightning strike. The current ferro-concrete version was built in 1931 and survived WWII air raids.
Osaka Castle is in Chuo Ward, surrounded by Osaka Castle Park. The nearest subway station is Tanimachi 4-Chome Station (exit 9) on the Tanimachi and Chuo lines. Alternatively, take the JR Loop Line to Osaka-jo-koen Station, a 10-minute ride from JR Osaka Station.
The castle is open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, with the last entry at 4:30 PM. Admission to the castle tower and museum is 600 yen. Nishinomaru Garden has an additional fee. The castle is closed from December 28th to January 1st.
